My spiked keychains are all reinforced with a simple piece of plastic (think plastic binder divider type plastic).
This ensures the spikes are secured in place and will not fall out if used as intended (for swinging at a handsy creep)!

The inspiration here is pretty clear, but the idea was born out of my inability to throw away any type of scraps!
